To
me, this highly readable book, brings two key messages: 1) the truth will always
come out - soon or later - no matter what; 2) life is a wonderful mysterious
journey and its great twists and turns are made by apparently random connections
among people.
Aside
from the intriguing details kept secret in the minds of just a few people for
over 30 years, the book brings to life a perspective on professional careers
that were made out of the whole story. Actually the connection between Mark Felt
(former FBI No 2 and "Deep Throat") and Bob Woodward started (by
chance) because of Mr. Woodward active search of his professional career after
completing its Navy experience. A simple casual chat between a young man eager
to find himself and an important government official double his age was meant to
change, eventually, the lives of both men.
Probably Watergate would not have happened if that
single chat (and the relationship - young eager man up and coming and older,
wiser sort of adviser - it developed ever since) ever took place. Woodward had a
chance to make a name for himself at the very beginning of his career of
reporter while Felt had a chance to change the way people thought about
the Presidency ever since. No longer it will be possible to fully understand why
he did it: today not even Felt, 91 and unable to recall many of his memories,
can do it. It does not matter by now. Many things have changed since then, yet
unfortunately, many things have remained the same and the reading of this books
makes you realize all of this.
Yet
this book does not convey any sort of political message in itself. It is just a
message of respect for a vow made and this is the essence that makes of it a
beautiful read even for people that know little about Watergate and the Nixon's
years and don't care to know about any of this, so called, political and
historical stuff.
